The official currency of France is EURO (€). The euro is divided into euro and cents. One euro is worth 100 cents.

Tipping

In general a tipping of 10 to 15 % is common in restaurants, taxis, for guides etc. It is also common to leave a small change at bar or café tables.

 

Domestic calls

In France all phone numbers have a 10-digits number (9 digits from abroad as you do not dial the first 0). To dial France from the abroad: use the international phone access 0033, then the number minus the first 0.

Most telephone booths now take phonecards (télécartes). To buy from Post-Offices, Tobacconists (Tabac), Newsagents and where advertised on telephone booths.

Calls can be received at phone boxes where the blue bell sign is shown.

Electricity

Electricity current in Paris is 220V, 50 Hz, as in the rest of continental Europe. Arrangements for adapters can be made in most large hotels.

Public transport

The bus, Metro and RER network is divided into 5 zones for the whole of the Paris region. Zones 1 and 2 correspond to the city of Paris itself and a little of the suburbs.

In Paris the same ticket is used for the Metro, buses and RER. Hold on to your ticket for the entire journey as it may be checked at any moment by inspectors. There are ticket offices at every RATP and RER station; tickets can also be bought at the "tabacs".

 

Carte "Formule 1": one-day travel card. The tarif depends on the number of zones

Carte "Paris-Visite": first-class travel card for 2, 3, or 5 days. It also offers a reductions of between 20 and 35% on many of the tourist sites in Paris.

Carte orange hebdomadaire: one week travel card

 

Business hours

Department stores open Monday to Saturday between 9:30 am and 6:30 pm. Small shops generally open earlier at 8:00 am and close later at 8:00 pm. However, they may take a long lunch break and close between 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm or 3:00 pm Some Paris stores open on Sunday, but not all.

 

Office hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

 

Museums are generally open between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, six days a week, and closed Monday or Tuesday.

Stamps can be bought in every post office but also in Tobaccos.

 

Bank hours

Banking hours vary depending on the bank, but generally opening hours are Monday to Friday between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon and from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Certain Paris branches open for long hours on Saturday. Certain banks may remain closed on Monday, and most close at 12:00 noon on the day immediately preceding a bank holiday and for all or part of the day immediately after a bank holiday. However, there are no set hours for banking and various branches will differ with regard to opening times.
